Happy Birthday Tyler!!

It doesn't seem to show up too well in the picture above, but Jack has a nice bruise and scrape on the top of his forehead where he did a faceplant into the carpet yesterday. Today he had his first "swim lesson" at Andy's gym. He and the other babies aren't really learning to swim, but they're playing and learning to get comfortable with the water. Jack shed a few tears, but overall he seemed to enjoy himself.

Here's a cute picture of Lou snuggled in his new bed, with his new toy that we got today at the pet store. Jack loves going there and getting to see all the animals. When we were looking at the beds, we put this one down on the floor so we could see how Lou liked it. Jack beat Lou to it and sprawled out on the bed, much to the amusement of the other shoppers.

Anniversary

It was 3 years ago today that Andy and I got married at the Hotel Allegro in downtown Chicago! (Though we met each other in 1997 when we were barely out of our teens at Indiana University.) I was reminiscing about our wedding day and pulled up a few pictures. In some ways 3 years ago seems like it was a long time ago, and sometimes it feels like it was just yesterday!

Also a few pictures from our honeymooon. Oh, how it would be nice to be in Cabo right now instead of chilly Chicago!

Return of the blue monster

Look out Chicago...the blue monster has come again.

This morning, Andy and I took Jack to a Halloween event at Andy's gym. Older kids were making crafts, and a magician was there, but Jack was most interested in looking out of the big windows down onto Congress Avenue.

He also had fun playing with balls and blocks in the gym, and he especially liked the small punching bag. Look at Jack's skills--the bag is just a blur as he hit it!

He did at least watch the magic show for a few minutes.

Jack had left the room before the grand finale with the magician's rabbit, but he was nice enough to bring the bunny back out after the show so Jack could pet her.

Jack also got to wear his costume on Tuesday when his tots class had a Halloween party. Here are some pictures our nanny took:

Birthday party

Yesterday Jack and I went to the first birthday party of Hannah, the daughter of our friends Mary and Eric. In the picture above, the birthday girl was very excited about her new rocking horse. Below is a picture of the three little ones at the party who are children of former kids from the same neighborhood (Andy, Eric, and Greg).

Jack looking very serious with Eric.

Lastly, just a couple pictures I took of the foliage earlier today when we went for a walk.

Toddler insomniac

(Wow, he sure looks like Dad in that picture)

Jack had an interesting night last night. He woke up crying at 11:30 and 12:30. After the 12:30 wake-up, I rocked him in the chair for a while and put him back in his crib. He then proceeded to play and sing until about 2 am.

Andy and I feel a bit zombie-like today. Of course Jack had to do this the night before I had a big meeting at work, too. Jack, buddy, next time you decide to stay up partying all night, please give me a heads up!

Here's a couple cute pictures I took tonight when Jack was finishing up dinner. Andy was showing Jack a new download on his Iphone.

The blue monster

A strange little monster came to visit yesterday--he had blue fur, three eyes, four arms, and a spotted green tummy.

Dad and Jack...not looking enthused about his costume.

Yesterday the park across from our house hosted a Halloween event, and our friends Shannon and Sammy Murante came and brought their 2 boys Luke (3 1/2) and Sammy (1 1/2). Sammy is the cute little monkey below.

The Murantes also came to a Halloween event with us last year--here are Jack and Sammy back then.

A couple videos of Jack in the pumpkin patch. He started busting out his dance moves a little to the music in the background. His skills attracted the attention of a little girl, but Jack played hard to get when she came over.

At the petting zoo we saw some goats,

cute little pigs!

and a soft bunny rabbit.

Jack also petted the truck next to the zoo.

Luke showed Jack how to play ski-ball.

"I've fallen, and I can't get up!" All the padding in Sammy's costume was quite cumbersome.

Later yesterday afternoon, Jack and I went to see Aunt Lisa, who was working at a race in Lincoln Park. Jack wasn't sure what to think of the strange lady who looked like a mouse.

All stitched up

(No, I am not so camera crazy that I brought it with us to the hospital; Andy took these with his phone.) Jack woke up with only a runny nose this morning, so we were able to go ahead with the surgery. His cold probably turned out to be a blessing in disguise, because his appetite has been lower than usual; especially in the mornings. We were at the hospital around 8:00, but he didn't get into the OR until 10:45. He hadn't been allowed to eat anything since last night, and couldn't drink anything after 6:30 this morning. Normally he would have been ravenous and most likely screaming his head off, but between his decreased appetite and all the interesting things to look at in the hospital, Jack was fine.

While we were in the pre-op section, Jack had a cool car to play with, and even light switches that were his height. He was a big hit with the nurses, as he kept waving and kissing at them. Apparently Jack is turning into quite the flirt.

Jack also provided us with some comic relief in the minutes before they took him away. He had been given some drugs, which they warned us would make him "drunk." For a while he wasn't phased at all, and I was beginning to wonder if the drugs would kick in before they came to take him. Then all of a sudden, his tongue became very fascinating. He got a little silly...

A little more silly....

And out-of-control silly! He probably would have been over the legal limit on the breathalizer at this point. His antics were definitely a nice distraction so Andy and I couldn't build up as much anxiety in the anticipation of him being taken away.

The surgery took about 1 hour and 45 minutes. Jack was crying when we got to the recovery room, but he calmed down once I held him. I gave him a bottle of sugar water, but after a while he took matters into his own hands and started chugging.

The patient is groggy, but recovering nicely at home. He's all snuggled up watching one of his videos. Thanks for all the cards and other well wishes!
